The first outdoor meeting of 2003 for the Ridgeway History Group, attracted 26 members to a talk given by Ron Watts at the pembroke dock Martello Tower and Museum.

Fortifications around Milford Haven waterway began in the 1840s,when it was thought there would be an invasion from France.

One of the fortifications is the gun tower or Martello tower. This could house one officer and up to 33 gunners.

The first room to the left as you enter the tower, is the officers' quarters, where there are two fires, one for cooking, one for heating.

There are grid vents in the walls if which ensure circulation of air and help keep the damp at bay.

The next room towards the centre of the Tower housed the gunners sleeping quarters. It was designed so that the floor area could be cleared by storing everything away to enable the 12 pound Howitzers to be fired. A trapdoor provided access to a water tank below, which housed 12,500 gallons of fresh water drained from the roof.

This was used for washing cooking and also cool down the guns after firing. A reload of the guns would be done in one-and a-half-minutes. The recoil was about six feet.

After descending the spiral stairs to the basement, it was surprisingly dry and warm despite being 12-feet below sea level. This room was where the gunpowder was ground on two long benches. Some lighting was provided by candles behind protected screens, as naked flames were dangerous.

Another source of light was through radial lenses directing natural light through the floor above.

Next to third room was the shifting lobby, where the kegs of gun powder were stored. The inner door is made of copper and is blast-proof.

This part of the building is reminiscent of the structure of a ship. The last part of the tour took in the roof area. Here a 32 pounder cannon is on show and the views of th estuary are outstanding.

The museum contains many interesting and unusual items and stories of local history. It is well worth a visit for both local residents and visitors.

The next meeting of the Ridgeway History Group will be on Wednesday June 4. Members should assemble in Neyland (Brunel statue) at 7 pm for a guided visit. Any queries to (01834) 871209.
