Bethany and Amanda Freeman recently joined 'Team Rickshaw' in its 700-mile journey across the UK.
Sixteen-year-old Bethany Freeman from Milford Haven, and her mother Amanda completed The One Show's Rickshaw Challenge, helping raise over £1.5 million for BBC Children in Need.
Pedalling day and night to help cover 700 miles in just eight days, the pair rode in relay as part of a 10-strong team and faced freezing winter conditions to bring the rickshaw home, live at Albert Square on the BBC Children in Need appeal night.
Bethany, who has Down's Syndrome, quickly became known for her quirky ways of keeping moral high, singing along from everyone from One Direction to Queen to help keep the pedals turning. Even after a fall on day five of the challenge, Bethany was quick to get back on the rickshaw the very next day, helping carry the team to their successful finish.
Speaking of the challenge, Bethany said: "Team Rickshaw are like a family and I've loved it so much. A big thank you to everyone who supported us!"
Prior to the challenge, Bethany had attended the Taking Flight Theatre Company, which helped raise her self-confidence and social skills, and discover her passion for acting. Funded by BBC Children in Need, the organisation worked with groups of people who were traditionally under-represented in theatre, film and television.
Having already appeared in two productions, Bethany's third performance will come later this year as she prepares for a production of the Dylan Thomas play, 'A Child's Christmas in Wales'.
Bethany's mother Amanda was also part of Team Rickshaw, and was responsible for pedalling the rickshaw to the highest point during the challenge - Shap Hill in Cumbria. Here viewers quite literally watched the uphill struggle as she made her plea to 'all the middle aged women out there' to pledge their support for the team.
Asked about their involvement with the challenge, Amanda added: "It really was a phenomenal experience and we've been overwhelmed by the amazing support from the public. It's definitely inspired us to take on new challenges and lead a healthier, more active lifestyle. That said, I might give it a while before getting back on a rickshaw!"
Team Rickshaw consisted of five young people, each supported by projects funded by BBC Children in Need. Four of the riders - including Bethany – were partnered with a parent, while One Show host Alex Jones paired with Martin Perry to complete the group. Rickshaw veteran Matt Baker also supported the ride, cycling alongside the team throughout the journey and acting as mentor to the riders.
For the first time ever, this year's Rickshaw Challenge reached all four UK nations, and the subsequent 700-mile journey meant that the team had to pedal throughout the night to reach their goals. As those who have benefited from the charity's work first hand, the young riders and their families undertook the challenge to help other young people across the country.
With this year's efforts currently totalling £1,534,996, the Rickshaw Challenge has raised in excess of £5 million for the charity to date. Each and every penny raised is given directly to projects across the UK that make a positive change to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people.
Team Rickshaw member Alex Jones said: "It's been absolutely wonderful being part of Team Rickshaw; I've met some truly inspirational people and it's been a pleasure to ride alongside them. We faced some highs and lows along the journey, but got through it as a team to raise a phenomenal total. A huge thanks to everyone who's got behind us."
Speaking of the efforts of all those involved, David Ramsden, BBC Children in Need Chief Executive, said: "The huge amount raised is a real tribute to the hard work of an incredible team. Congratulations to all of those involved, particularly the young people who should be truly proud that their efforts are going to help change lots more young lives!"
