ARTIST Marina Strangward, of the 'Turnpike Gallery', Pembroke, will be exhibiting her latest work in the 'Small Gallery' at Colby from May 14 to June 3. 'Rhythms of the Sea' is aptly named for the woman who is known for making waves. Indeed, the majority of her seascapes have labels attached which include the word 'Blue' suitably pre-fixed with 'China', 'Cool' or 'Pembrokeshire' - the latter of course, providing an abiding inspiration. If you've been delighted with the blueness and the movement which she puts into the myriad moods of the sea, you'll be doubly delighted when you see a scattering of landscapes alongside the 'blues'. Movement is still there with her fields of waving corn and wild flowers, and yes, her chosen colours for the skies come from that same sunny Pembrokeshire pallet - this is one artist for whom dull doesn't do! Certainly Marina's had no grey days since moving to Tenby (seven years ago), and taking up painting seriously. Prior to the move she had been too busy with family and work to devote much time to her painting, although she had always 'dabbled'. A course of lessons with Bob Reeves at the Greenhill Centre served as a launching pad for a burgeoning career. She was soon exhibiting (and winning awards) around the local shows, as well as being asked to undertake a number of commissions. Working mostly in oils and acrylics, she was one of the first artists locally to utilise the popular 'wrap round' style on canvases. In addition, she often presents her waves on diptychs, a sort of 'breaker in the breakers' without, seemingly, any loss of the natural fall of the water or missing a single fleck of spume, unbelievably challenging! (But we are talking about an artist who is eminently capable of rising to the challenge). Don't miss the show! Enquiries, please ring the Gallery on (01834) 814200.
