A seven-year-old primary school pupil at Llanboidy CP, near Whitland, Rhodri Evans, of Maesyrhaf, Blaenwaun, is in for a special treat this week as the winner of a luxury Welsh food hamper worth £50.

When taking part in an NFU Cymru-Wales organised survey at last summer's Carmarthenshire Festival of Agriculture, he said he loved eating Welsh meat and thought it was important to support local farmers.

His entry was the first out of the hat and he received his prize from NFU Cymru-Wales president and Carmarthenshire native Hugh Richards, who farms near Felinfoel, Llanelli.

In their survey, the National Farmers Union wanted to know all about the decisions people make when buying meat. The results showed that the Welsh are a patriotic lot, with over 90 per cent of those surveyed saying that they always bought Welsh meat.

Rhodri is the only child of Michael and Marina Evans who keep 70 milkers, a number of dairy followers and a few beef cattle on their 120 acres - Michael is a member of the union's St. Clears local branch.
