A young Eco Champion from Pembroke has been rewarded for her efforts for keeping the streets beside her home clean.

Seven-year-old Abbie Donohoe was presented with her own set of litter pickers by Pembrokeshire County Council Eco Champion co-ordinator Mark Bond recently.

The Ysgol Gellu Aur/Golden Grove School pupil received the kit after she was determined to do her bit for the environment when she was unable to join her friends for a beach clean at Freshwater East a few weeks ago.

Disappointed at not being able to attend, she rolled up her sleeves, begged her mother to join her on a litter pick around her community and they were soon reaping the rewards for their endeavours by collecting two black bags worth of rubbish along the Upper Lamphey Road.

“We couldn’t believe how much was out there,” said mum, Laura.

“We filled the bags just from picking up the paved side of the road.

“There was more across the other side, but it wasn’t safe to pick that up.

“The amount of coffee cups and fast food packaging was ridiculous.”

Abbie, who is part of her school’s Eco Club, says she can’t wait to get started with her new litter pickers.

“Dropping litter is naughty, but I like to pick it up so we can keep our streets clean.

“I pick it up when we go for walks with my Mum, Dad and baby sister Edie. The last time we went, we put it under her pram.

“Hopefully one day she will be able to join me and my older brother Olly,” she added.
