The way Pembrokeshire County Council carries out its scrutiny processes are currently being revamped and there is a focus on culture change within the authority.

Councillors received an update on how work is continuing to improve scrutiny and a draft action plan was presented at Thursday’s (February 7) democratic services committee.

Director of community services Dr Steven Jones said that the “culture of scrutiny and how it sits in council governance arrangements” impacts on its success.

Changes to the process have been ongoing for three years but have in recent times picked up pace with a working group set up, and a revised model of scrutiny is due to start in May.

Input from Public Governance Wales and the Wales Audit Office has been taken into consideration.

“Probably the most important one is culture, that’s the main say of this. Without the right attitude of all those concerns it’s not going to happen,” said Clr. Diane Clements.

Also included in the draft action plan are changes under engagement, practice and structure.

Further progress reports will be brought to the committee.
