Consultants have been appointed to completely re-vamp Tenby's De Valence Pavilion, it was revealed this week.

Tenby Town Council agreed on Tuesday night to appoint the consultants to come up with some options for future uses of the town council run pavilion.

The pavilion costs the council tax payer in Tenby between £30,000 and £50,000 to run and it is thought that an up-to-date but smaller auditorium for the performing arts would be more economical than the existing hall. It is also hoped that there may be space left over for other uses.

With funding for the feasibility study largely coming from the Welsh Development Agency, plus a proportion from the town council, it is hoped that architects will be appointed in the middle of next month, with the team reporting back their findings at the end of February.

Following this, there will be an exhibition of the key findings and a public meeting early in March.

"This is a very exciting project which could provide the town with an improved community building and save the town council a substantial sum of money each year," Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, told the Observer this week.

"We are grateful to the WDA for coming up with the funds and hope that there will be strong interest in the project from existing and potential users of the De Valence.

"Community involvement is crucial to the success of the project - only then can we expect the consultants to bring forward good ideas that will be relevant to our needs."

The town council has appointed Tenby-based town planner, Mike Thorne, to act on their behalf in the selection of consultants and to manage the study.

Any existing or potential users of the De Valence who would like to put their views on the future of the pavilion to the consultants are asked to 'phone Mike on (01834) 842145 or to write to him at York House, Lower Frog Street, Tenby.
