Villagers have stepped up their fight to have a 20-inch wide pavement along the trunk road through their community widened.

The strip alongside the A40 in Llanddewi Velfrey is so narrow that a woman had her handbag ripped off by the slipstream of a passing lorry and a dog was killed by a passing truck.

But villagers have just been told that work on bypassing their community won't start for at least another six years.

"The people of Llanddewi Velfrey have had enough," said South Pembrokeshire AM, Angela Burns.

"They've been told in the past that they can't have pavement improvements because it's pointless as they will soon be bypassed - but we now know that's at least another six years away."

The villagers are now gathering a petition calling for road safety improvements, which Mrs. Burns will take to the Welsh Assembly's petitions committee.

"We've been fighting to see the speed limit through the village dropped to 30 mph and for the pavement to be widened for years," said community councillor Keith Thomas.

"We have been fobbed off for so many years about getting a bypass, at least we now know it's a minimum of six years away."

His wife Gloria added: "We cannot continue to live with this tiny pavement. People have to use it to get to our only village shop which is also the post office. It's too narrow for my daughter to push her pram along; it's a complete deathtrap."

Mrs. Burns is advising the villagers on the wording of the petition and hopes to present it in the New Year.

"We have just had one fatal car crash just on the outskirts of the village and it's a miracle that no one has been seriously hurt on this ridiculously narrow pavement," she added.

"Now that the government itself has ruled out any work on a bypass for at least six years, then surely the Trunk Roads Agency will be able to see the need for urgent safety measures."
