The 10th annual walk for Diabetes UK Cymru was held last Sunday around Llys y Fran Reservoir.

The event, organised by the Tenby and District Volunteers Group, attracted a large number of walkers of all ages and abilities, who braved the challenging six-and-a-half-mile walk to raise funds for research into diabetes.

The walkers set off after a few words from local MP, Mr. Nick Ainger, himself a diabetic, in very wet conditions. This, however, soon cleared up, and the walk finished in glorious sunshine.

It's too early to be able to say how much has been raised by this year's walk, but the group was able to hand over a cheque at the volunteers evening, recently held in Cardiff, for last year's walk for the sum of £3,076.10.

It was wonderful to see people of all ages, getting their walking boots on, getting out there and raising money for such a worthy cause.

The oldest walker on the day was 77-year-old Mr. Ron Webb from Rosemarket, while the youngest was three-and-a-half-year-old Mitchell Williams from Pembroke Dock, who was diagnosed last January. Mitchell walked and chatted every step of the way, through some very muddy conditions.

The committee would like to thank all the helpers who manned the drinks and refreshment stations, Mike Worcester, of Stepaside Coachworks, for using his 4x4 vehicle, all who donated raffle prizes, the local supermarkets for donating squash and biscuits, and, of course, a special thank you to all the walkers without whom this event would not happen.

The next fund-raising event for the group will be a car treasure hunt to be held on Friday evening, July 24, 6.30 pm. Please call Maureen on 812025 (evenings) or 812491 (during working hours) for information.
