Over 70 youngsters took to the pitch last Sunday for a regional hockey tournament.

The first ever South West Wales junior hockey development league took place at Sir Thomas Picton Astroturf pitch in Haverfordwest.

Players came from Crymych, Cwmtawe, Fishguard and Goodwick, Haverfordwest, Pembroke and Tenby for the tournament.

In the morning, the under 13s played seven-a-side matches, followed by full 11-a-side games for the under 15s.

Angela Miles, hockey development officer for Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council - said the emphasis of the day was to encourage players to participate in competitive hockey.

"It was a wonderful opportunity to give teams in South West Wales the chance to compete without having to travel too far," she said.

"We hope that as these tournaments become more regular, more and more teams will take the opportunity to take part."

The next meeting for the league is on Sunday, October 23, at Carmarthen Leisure Centre.
