Local councillors have recommended refusal for an application for a catering trailer’s Street Trading Licence to operate in Tenby.

The application which has been submitted to Pembrokeshire County Council is for a street food vendor to sell ‘Tex Mex’ food seven-days-a-week between 9.30 am and 6 pm.

It requested operating on patches either on the pavement outside St. Mary’s Church; the Tenby Rock and Fudge shop; the end of the Esplanade; or the grass verge alongside the multi-storey car park.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby town council after receiving notification of the application, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane said that it was ‘unfair’ to allow such vendors to operate in the town when permanent food outlets had to pay such high business rates.

“It would be unfair to support this when people are going bankrupt in the town so I don’t think we should even entertain this!

“We should write to the county council with our genuine concerns for local trades people on such matters,” she continued.

Clr. Laurence Blackhall agreed and said that they would object to each venue suggested. “The town council has a longstanding policy on this which we have made very clear in the past. We should be very firm in our response in saying that we expect this application to be rejected.

“We don’t want the iconic view of Tenby’s streetscape being spoiled by having more street traders, and we should reject it on the basis that it is inconsistent with the stated policy of PCC on a number of fronts,” he remarked.
