Narberth's world boxing referee, John Phillips, has just returned from a very successful tournament in Liverpool where he refereed the Four Nations tournament between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

He stayed at the famous Adelphi Hotel, where a successful TV series was seen on our screens last year. John created a little bit of history, although he didn't know it at the time.

In a previous bout, one of the Welsh boys was disqualified against his Irish opponent and in the final John refereed the Ireland v England bout and had to disqualify the Irish boy for persistent holding.

There was a crescendo of boos and catcalls from the crowd and the atmosphere was very heated, and when he climbed from the ring he was told that the same boy who won on a disqualification the previous round was himself disqualified. In all, John's 30 years of refereeing around the world he can't remember the same boy in two disqualification bouts at the same championship meeting.

Wales disappointed with only one gold medal, but had five silvers.

John's next important date is the referees and judges' annual meeting on August 11, he being the vice-chairman of Wales Referees.

John has now completed the 'Grand Slam' of British boxing. He has refereed at all four important events, Four Nations Schoolboys, Four Nations U19s, Four Nations Cadet Championships and the Senior Championships - the first to do so.
