A drive to increase recycling within the county has been launched by Pembrokeshire County Council. In a bid to divert as much waste as possible from landfill, the council plans to increase the number of materials it will take for recycling. A pilot project is currently underway at the Winsel Civic Amenity and Recycling Centre near Haverfordwest. Visitors are being handed leaflets explaining the materials the council will accept for recycling and asking people to separate them out in advance. Among the new material accepted are timber, televisions and computer monitors, paints, household batteries, cooking oil, mobile phones, fluorescent tubes and textiles. This is in addition to newspapers and magazines, garden waste, and glass already collected. Households should take the new recyclable materials to the Winsel site. Timber is limited to domestic amounts only. A full list of recyclable materials is contained in the leaflet. Clr. Brian Hall, cabinet member for the environment and transportation said the council faced huge fines if it did not help protect the environment and reduce the amount of waste it sent to landfill. "It's not longer a case of something it would be nice to do, it's a case of something we must do," he said.
