Residents in west Carmarthenshire will no longer have to travel miles to recycle their household waste. A new recycling centre has been opened just off the A40, near Whitland. The Househoold Waste Recycling Centre will accept a range of household goods, benefiting local residents and the environment. The county council facility will be managed by Cwm Environmental, a company that already works with the council to dispose of and recycle waste in Carmarthenshire. Chairman of Carmarthenshire County Council and councillor for Llanboidy, Roy Llewellyn, officially opened the centre last week. He said: "I am delighted to be opening this facility which will benefit both the local residents and the environment. I would like to thank everyone who has worked so very hard to get the site opened." Other dignitaries in attendance included Whitland County Clr. Jimmy Morgan, Whitland Mayor, Con Harries, and Executive Board Member for the Environment, Clr. Pam Palmer. Clr. Jimmy Morgan said: "We have been working hard for some time to bring this facility to Whitland and I am delighted to see it opened today. "It will be a great asset to the town and I am sure that local residents will make full use of it." Clr. Pam Palmer added: "Each and every one of us needs to continue to reduce and recycle the waste we create to ensure a bright future for the environment in which we live. I am sure that this facility will be a great help to local residents, bringing the whole process closer to their community." Items that can be recycled at the site include cans, glass, paper, cardboard, textiles, plastics and green waste. Fridges, other large white goods and household furniture will also be accepted, as well as engine oil, fluorescent tubes, paints and pesticides, waste electrical goods, car batteries, timber, scrap metal, mobile phones and toner cartridges. No commercial, industrial or agricultural waste will be allowed. Managing director of Cwm Environmental, John Rees, said: "As a company we are very proud to be managing this site and we will continue to work hard with the council to maximise use of the site." It is hoped the new site will help residents to recycle more. Current environmental legislation requires that 40 per cent of waste will have to be recycled by 2010.
