Narberth confirmed their status as prime promotion candidates with a dazzling display of running rugby which completely blew away visiting Abercynon at the Lewis Lloyd ground on Saturday.

In one of their most impressive displays this season, the National League division two leaders outscored mid-table Abercynon by 13 tries to one to notch up a whopping 85 points to seven win - although the game was not as one-sided as the scoreline may suggest.

In fact, Narberth had to retain their composure throughout, with the majority of their tries coming from counter-attacks from within their own half.

It was the dominance of the pack in loose play, and the abundant lineout ball won by Emori Katalau, Jason Jennings and Jamie Bohata, that provided the platform for the win - the biggest victory margin achieved by the Otters since they entered the National League over a decade ago.

If any game deserves to be branded 'champagne rugby' it was this one, with quality running and handling both at forward and in the threequarter line, with many of the large crowd still settling into their seats when young flanker Meurig Daniel opened the homesters' account by ghosting through under the posts from a quick tap penalty for a try converted by Simon Daniel.

Centre Andrew Bowen, who has proved a consistent play-maker for the Otters all season, again made his mark with his sniping and darting, and it was he who initiated their second touchdown, creating the space for lock Katalau to hare over.

Making his debut in the Otters' threequarter line alongside brother Andrew, centre Mike Jones - on dual registration from Neath - quickly attracted attention when he jinked his way through the Cynon defence to pouch Narberth's third try, which Daniel again converted to open up a convincing margin.

Four tries in six minutes from John Whitticombe, Andrew Jones, Aled Davies and skipper Simon Davies effectively ended Cynon's chances, with Whitticombe bagging his second, and Narberth's eighth, just before the interval to give the Otters an unassailable 52 points to nil lead at the break.

To their credit, Cynon never threw in the towel. In fact, they attacked at every opportunity and bagged a neat try themselves after the change around when fullback Gareth Evans zipped through and Richard Tibbs converted.

However, with Whitticombe and Andrew Jones both completing their hat-tricks, centre Mike Jones grabbing his second and scrum-half Chris Macdonald nabbing a vintage try from the blind-side of a scrum, there was no containing the Otters.

For the record, Daniel converted nine tries in total, while Aled Jones added the extras to Macdonald's touch down after the stand-off was substituted late in the second half.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth travel to take on Carmarthen Athletic, while an evening fixture against Oakdale has been scheduled for Tuesday.
