Pembrokeshire police have seized a record number of vehicles during May. A total of 71 seizures have been made under section 165 of the road traffic act - this is the most ever on division since the legislation has been implemented. This allows police to seize any vehicle which is not covered by insurance or if the driver does not have the correct licence. Inspector Nigel Hayes, of the Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit, said: "My officers are actively targeting drivers in Pembrokeshire who are driving vehicles without the correct documentation, and where the power exists we are seizing these vehicles. "People who drive without insurance should be aware that the cost of losing their vehicle would outweigh any cost of getting insurance. "The consequences of a seizure is that not only are you reported or arrested for the original offence, but it will cost you £105 to recover your vehicle and a storage charge of £12 for every day the vehicle is impounded. "The message is clear - make sure you are legal because if not we will identify you and we will seize your vehicle and prosecute you. To have no driving licence or no insurance and to drive a vehicle on a road is an extremely foolish thing to do. So get legal." Police are also warning people who let others drive their vehicle as the law also applies if drivers fail to check the detail of their insurance policy correctly and drive vehicles they are not properly insured for and as both they and the owner of the vehicle can be summoned.
