A record 655 people attended the third annual Energy Sector Information and Recruitment Evening at the Technium recently to find out from energy sector experts about well-paid local and worldwide employment opportunities in the energy sector.
The successful event gave the people who attended an insight into what it's like to work in the energy sector and the skills and qualifications needed to succeed. Careers advisers were also on hand to offer general advice and guidance about qualifications, training and other routes of entry. This was particularly important for the 220 pupils and students who attended.
The event was organised by Careers Wales West and the Technium, and was sponsored by members of the Energy Sector Workforce Development Group: Murco, Chevron, RWEnPower, Doosan Babcock, Aker Solutions, Milford Haven Port Authority, Dragon LNG, Cogent, ECITB, EU Skills and Pembrokeshire College.
Dave Smith, of Murco, and the chair of the Energy Sector Workforce Development Group, commented: "The energy sector in Pembrokeshire is a major employer of highly skilled resources and this has been magnified recently with the large scale capital projects to install LNG reception facilities, associated power generation and infrastructure.
"The continued recruitment and selection of personnel to fill the existing and future needs of these businesses is fundamental to the economic growth of Pembrokeshire and the wider energy sector in Wales.
"This event gave employers and stakeholders the opportunity to talk to over 650 interested people under one roof about the sector and the range of career opportunities available to them either through vocational or tertiary education routes.
"The event was very successful - numbers were up 46 per cent from last year - and it is hoped that repeating this event on an annual basis with the support of the local workforce development group will provide local people with a recognised means of accessing and finding out about potential career opportunities in the energy sector."
Jean Brown, team manager from Careers Wales West, said: "By raising people's awareness of the range of opportunities available to them within the energy industries, the hope is that it will benefit both the people - who choose to work in the energy sector - and the industry itself."
