Summer fun has hit Heatherton as they staged their first 'record breaking' event in aid of raising money for local charities. This week seen visitors to Heatherton taking on the famous but obscure sport of 'Welly Wanging'. For those unfamiliar with this sport, it is a highly entertaining and popular competition established in 1986, with huge championships being held throughout the UK annually. The player has to sit on a stool and will throw or 'wang' the welly backwards over their head; the person how throws it the furthest will be the winner. With over 400 taking part, including dads, mums, children and grandparents, Heatherton was able to successfully raised over £500 for local charities on the day. Ceryn Ling and Lily Evans broke the record for the under 10s, throwing a distance of 6.87 m and 5.30m, respectfully. In the adults challenge, Peter Whitehead was victorious with a huge 'wang' of 14.9m. Operations manager Simon Webb commented: "It has been a great day for all involved and we have raised a lot of money for charity. Some of the 'wanging' has been amazing to see. I had a go and couldn't throw a welly further than 2m!" This is not the last of Heatherton's 'record breaking' events as they will be holding a basketball hoop throwing and cracker eating contest today (Friday) and on August 10.
