The first Young Farmers Clubs in West Wales were formed in the mid-1930s and the Pembrokeshire Federation became established in 1939. That being so, 2009 is a momentous year for the movement in this area as members and officials mark its 70th anniversary.
In some respects, it is reasonable to suppose that just about everything would have changed over the interim years and yet, as far as the YFC's are concerned, it's objects remain exactly the same.
Now part of a worldwide group of organisations sharing similar aims the YFC's can readily align themselves with Future Farmers, the 4H movement and the Christian Young Farmers of eastern Europe.
Throughout England and Wales, there are presently 659 individual clubs and a total membership in excess of 22,000 from a variety of backgrounds, dedicated to providing a framework to provide young people aged 10-26 who share an interest in the rural environment with a wealth of new experiences and opportunities.
These include personal development and training opportunities that enable members to learn an array of new skills, get involved with the local community, have a voice on rural issues, travel abroad and enjoy a dynamic social life.
This was evident by so many participants and supporters enjoying a great time at the 66th annual county at the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Showground last weekend.
