The competition celebrates the inspirational work of teachers who keep alive the tradition of music-making in our schools.
As a finalist, Paul has won an Elonex computer and Sibelius software, which helps in musical notation, for his school. He was also presented with a finalist's certificate by Classic FM presenter Henry Kelly, in a ceremony at Classic FM's central London studios.
Speaking at the awards, Henry said: "The Music Teacher of the Year Awards are part of Classic FM's commitment not just to introducing classical music to our listeners, but also to encourage music teachers to spread the word to a growing number of pupils. I know from the School Run requests that there are more and more youngsters who are not only listening but want to get involved in music making and they can't do that without music teachers like Paul."
Paul, who has been working at the school for 14 years, said he was "gobsmacked" to have made the shortlist. He was nominated for the national award by parent Jennifer Richards, who described Paul as a "charismatic and dynamic" teacher who "has such an affinity with his students that they find learning and making music not only rewarding, but also immensely enjoyable."
Classic FM launched Music Teacher of the Year four years ago with the support of the then Department for Education and Employment. The scheme seeks to reward the vital work being undertaken in schools every day by music teachers around the country.
