Tenby Town Council have responded to points made by members of the Rotary Club, after they contacted the organisation to inform them of the possible sale of Augustus Place Community Centre.
Recently, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter suggested that an approach be made to Pembrokeshire County Council to see if they wished to purchase the building and replace it with two new in-keeping homes in that area.
This was because bookings for the community centre were so low and had not improved even after lots of recent publicity.
After Tenby Rotary were informed of the idea, a letter from their president, Mr. Richard Ormond, was brought before the council at their meeting on Tuesday, querying a number of points.
"Has the council actively marketed the centre, with all possible avenues of further use and income being explored," he asked, also wanting assurances that, should the sale go ahead to the Pembrokeshire Housing Association, any housing would be occupied by longstanding Tenby people and not 'outsiders'.
Responding to the letter, Clr. Mrs. Rossiter felt that the town council had done all they could to market and promote the centre as a facility, with Clr. Mike Evans saying that the next option would be to declare the building surplus and for the council to investigate ways of how to provide some form of affordable housing on the site.
He added that a strict local occupancy rule should be attached to any new properties that may be built should the facility be sold, and that it would be sensible to approach the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority first to see if that the idea was acceptable.
