Sir,

I would like to correct several errors and clarify a number of issues raised in Mr. Hallett's letter entitled 'Pros and cons of residents parking' (published October 8, 2010).

The traffic warden service will be transferred from Dyfed Powys Police to Pembrokeshire County Council from February 1, 2011.

The first resident permit parking scheme was introduced in 1998 and there are now 50 such schemes across the county.

All schemes are subject to informal and formal consultations to comply with legal requirements. No scheme has been introduced without the support of the majority of residents.

The fee for a residents permit was set in 1997 at £25 and can only be increased in line with inflation. It has been increased twice and is currently £30. It is due to be increased in 2011.

Practice in Cardiff has no relevance to what happens in Pembrokeshire. There are 50 schemes in the county with 644 spaces and approximately 1,000 permits issued.

Concessions are already available to any motorist when regularly parking in council car parks; weekly tickets provide seven days parking for the price of six, season tickets at a 40 per cent discount and reserved spaces at a 20 per cent discount.

For information on Pembrokeshire County Council's parking services, please contact Geoff Sutton, parking services manager, on 01437 775218.

Clr. Jamie Adams,

Deputy leader and cabinet member for highways and planning,

Pembrokeshire County Council.
