Tavernspite School pupils have been learning about the Wales Air Ambulance before stepping out on a six-mile sponsored walk for the charity. More than 70 pupils and parents will be completing the walk this Sunday (April 20) and hope to raise more than £1,000 for the cause. Air ambulance volunteers David Gent and Val Kilbey led a special assembly to tell the school about the work of the ambulance. They told the pupils that it takes just eight minutes for the helicopter to get from Swansea to Tavernspite and that it costs £4 million a year to run the service. "What you are doing is a wonderful thing for us because it costs a lot of money to keep the three helicopters in the service flying," Mr. Gent told the whole school. Headteacher Kevin Phelps said teachers, parents and especially the pupils were getting behind the event. "Last year's walk raised £2,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and the PTA and everyone really enjoyed taking part," he said. "An event like this fits in nicely with our ethos as a healthy school and the enthusiasm from the children has been wonderful."
