Plant care specialists Bayer Garden donated 26 willow trees to Tenby Junior School as part of its participation in the United Nations Environment Programme's 'Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign'.
Half the trees have been used to make a wall around the secret garden and the other half will be entwined to make an archway to the wooden hut style classroom. The trees were planted in the school's grounds by a team of 20 pupils who were assisted by their parents as well as Lowri Walker and Scott Williams from Bayer Garden. The 'Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign' is a global initiative that encourages individuals, communities, businesses and organisations to enter tree planting pledges online with the objective of planting at least one billion trees worldwide each year. Each pledge can be anything from a single tree to several million trees. Lowri explained why she chose to donate the trees to Tenby Junior School: "The school dedicates a lot of time and effort to working with the environment and already has an eco garden, nature garden and a secret outdoor classroom, so I knew that any trees we donated to them would be in safe hands." Tom Cox, Year 4 class teacher from Tenby Junior School, said: "We're delighted Bayer Garden chose to involve us in their campaign. The trees look wonderful and we're all looking forward to seeing them mature over the years." Lowri added: "I believe we have a corporate and personal responsibility to look after the environment, so I'm delighted to be taking part in the campaign. I'm thrilled both the pupils and the staff will be able to watch the trees grow and I hope others will be able to enjoy them for many years to come." Special thanks go to Carl and Jan Wainwright from Manorbier Garden Centre, who supplied the trees, the Tenby Inner Wheel Ladies, who provided refreshment for the workers, Keith Walker from Tenby Rugby Club, who came down to lend a hand, and Clr. Michael Evans who has been instrumental in the initiation of the event.
