Llangennech 31 pts. Narberth 38
It was non-stop action in this pulsating game where the Otters took the honours in the first half and Llangennech took over in the second and came close to winning.
After two indifferent performances, away to Corus and at home to Carmarthen Athletic, the Narberth team came alive and played some scintillating rugby to lead by 27 points without reply at the interval.
Passes which went to ground in the two previous games were taken cleanly. The right options produced try-scoring opportunities and every chance or half chance was grabbed with both hands.
Narberth outside-half Aled Davies had the chance to put the visitors in front after two minutes, but his penalty kick swerved to the left of the posts.
After 16 minutes, fullback Matthew Davies, making his first start for over 12 months following injury, gave the Narberth team the lead with a well-taken try, converted by winger Nick Jones.
It came from a broken play move and Davies had moved up to join the attack, spotted a gap and left the defenders floundering as he ran through for a try from the 22.
Eleven minutes later, scrum-half Adrian Killa finished off a great handling movement from the halfway line initiated by a defence-splitting break by Matthew Davies. Nick Jones added the points for the conversion.
In the next 10 minutes, three more scores followed for the Otters. Matthew Davies was in support when Aled Davies was tackled, but managed to pass the ball back to Matthew Davies, who kicked a well-taken drop-goal.
Winger Nick Jones then went over for a try in the left corner after more slick passing by the Narberth backs, but he was unable to convert the try, and then right wing Tom Bonnell finished off another exciting move in the right corner.
Aled Davies threw out a long pass to Matthew Davies, who chipped the ball over the top for Bonnell to win the race for the touchdown for an unconverted try.
Dreams of a cricket score by the Narberth supporters soon vanished. Two minutes into the second half Llangennech came back with an unconverted try by number eight Chris Jones after good pressure by the Llangennech pack.
After 12 minutes, Nick Jones picked up his second try of the match for Narberth when he ran in from the 22, before Llangennech had a 10-minute purple patch which produced three tries.
The first was scored by centre Stuart Fletcher, who went over in the left corner for an unconverted try, and then former Otters favourite Andrew Jones picked up a kick ahead to race over in the left corner from 40 metres for a try converted by Adrian Thomas.
The scoring burst by Llangennech came to an end when replacement prop Gareth Morgan went over for a try under the posts converted by Adrian Thomas to reduce the gap between the team to eight points.
Another smartly taken drop-goal by Matthew Davies widened the difference between the scores which was further extended by a long distance penalty kick by Nick Jones.
Llangennech did come back once again with an injury time try by flanker and captain Rob Foley, converted by Adrian Thomas, but it was too late to alter the result.
The conversion did, however, give Llangennech their second bonus point of the match.
Narberth's director of rugby, Jonathan Dodd, was in buoyant mood after the match and said: "It was a great game of rugby between two sides who wanted to play. As coaches we were very pleased with the performance and the first half display was the best 40 minutes of rugby we have produced this season. We scored some excellent tries, but in the second half Llangennech came back at us with some good rugby of their own.
"Although we scored an excellent try after the interval, it was very much all Llangennech. Referee Huw Griffiths, of Cwmafon, allowed the game to flow and, although it was a game of two halves, it was a tremendous spectacle.
"The first half performance showed the Narberth boys what they are capable of achieving and the second half was an object lesson as to what can happen when we go a bit off plan.
"It was nice to see Matthew Davies make his first appearance at fullback in over 12 months and he was the team management's choice as the Narberth man of the match.
"In addition there was a welcome return to form by a number of key players. Once again flanker Andrew Dennis was outstanding.
"Very often we have come up here to the Park Field and fallen on stony ground, so it was nice to come away with a win."
Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth are without a league fixture because of the international match at Cardiff between Wales and South Africa.
Narberth fielded: Matthew Davies, Tom Bonnell (Jonathan Morgan), Steve Martin, Neil Davies, Nick Jones, Aled Davies (Andrew Davies), Adrian Killa, Ryan Perrott, Dan Smith, Justin Hughes, capt., Chris James, Alex Jenkins, Gareth Bateman, Andrew Dennis and Derek Lewis.
