A pub landlord from Saundersfoot has called time on breast cancer, and has raised more than £2,000 for a Welsh cancer charity with help from his regular customers.
Dai Lawrence, landlord of the Old Chemist Inn, began fund-raising for breast cancer causes more than five years ago, when one of his friends and barmaids, Pat Field, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Pat has since successfully fought and recovered from the cancer, but Dai and other pub regulars have continued to fundraise to help research into breast cancer.
This year, their nominated charity was Cancer Research Wales, an indigenous Welsh cancer charity which funds groundbreaking research into cancer in hospitals across Wales.
This week, Dai presented a cheque for £2,075 to Maggie Hughes, charity director at Cancer Research Wales.
Dai said: "The money was raised throughout the year, from donations from our regular customers, darts nights, a Hallowe'en event and our annual trip on tour to Ireland. One customer, Phil Wright, even donated his 60th birthday money to the charity fund.
"We'll keep on fund-raising next year; I'm planning to take part in the New Year's Day swim again, and will nominate Cancer Research Wales as my charity."
He added: "Thanks go to Phil Wright, all the boys on the Dilligaf tour to Ireland, all staff and customers, and Martyn Williams, of Saundersfoot Festivities, who donated a large amount from the successful summer dance."
Maggie Hughes added: "We're delighted with the support we've received from everyone at the Old Chemist Inn in Saundersfoot. Their money will be donated to pioneering research projects into breast cancer, taking place here in Wales."
