BBC Children in Need has announced that it has awarded a new grant totalling £113,227 to Pembroke’s Tanyard Youth Project, a local project working with disadvantaged children and young people. The grant has been allocated through the charity’s Main Grants Programme.

The new funding will enable the project to provide services to young people in the area and means that BBC Children in Need currently has more than £419,000 invested in eight projects in Pembrokeshire

The newly awarded grant comes as BBC Children in Need celebrates its fundraising total for the 2018 Appeal: £58 million. The charity said that the incredible total would not have been possible without the public once again coming together to help raise money to change the lives of disadvantaged children and young people. The 2018 total is the culmination of the efforts of every single person across the UK who did something to raise money, from rambles, dance-a-thons and duck races, to sky diving, quiz nights and bake sales.

Tanyard Youth Project, which is based in Pembroke, has been awarded a three-year grant of £113,227. It will use the grant to provide a youth club for children and young people who would often be unable to afford to access, or pay for, leisure activities. During their time at the youth club, the children and young people will be able to make new friends, build their confidence and have access to sports, games and activity day trips.

Susan Lines, project manager at Tanyard Youth Project, said: “We were all so pleased to hear that we had been awarded funding by BBC Children in Need; it’s going to have such a positive impact on children and young people living in the area. It also means that for the next three years, we’ll be able to offer children and young people access to a safe space where they can have fun, spend time with their friends and take part in activities that many may not have previously been able to.”

Speaking of the new grant, Melinda Connelly, interim BBC Children in Need National Head of Wales, said: “We are incredibly proud to be awarding funding to these incredible projects, and cannot wait to see the difference they make to young lives in the community. Of course, none of our grants would be possible without the continued support of our fundraisers and supporters. Thanks to your generosity in 2018, children and young people all over the UK will have a brighter future!”

Speaking of the 2018 Appeal total, Simon Antrobus, chief executive of BBC Children in Need, said: “Once again our incredible supporters across the UK have done themselves proud. This tremendous result will allow us to continue our vital work to help make a difference to disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. As a charity we exist to support organisations in communities across the UK which empower children and extend their life choices, and this phenomenal total will go a long way in helping us make a lasting impact. An enormous thank you to everyone who once again went above and beyond!”
