Manorbier's cricketers surrendered their unbeaten record in division three this season in an extraordinary game against Fishguard.
Electing to bat on a pitch with very short boundaries and a reasonable batting surface, Manorbier took time to get settled.
Openers Mike May (11) and Steve Flook were back in the pavilion fairly early, which brought Jon Hughes and Jeremy Smith to the crease. Hughes smacked his first ball for six, and continued his assault on the Fishguard bowlers, scoring 82 runs in quick time (including nine 6s).
He was ably supported by Jeremy Smith with 69 and Keith May 25 as Manorbier reached 247 for 8 off their 40 overs.
Gary Strawbridge took 6 for 58 for Fishguard.
Facing a mammoth total, Fishguard went for broke, and Manorbier's depleted bowling attack found Steve Meaney in uncompromising mood. In a display of good timing and placement, he scored at a tremendous rate, striking 140 runs, including nine 6s and 14 fours. His opening batting partner, Alex Richards, was unbeaten with a half century.
Fishguard overhauled the total in the 40th over for the loss of three wickets.
It was a disappointing display from Manorbier, who should have at least earned a winning draw. Five dropped catches and some run out decisions going in favour of the Fishguard batsman did not help their cause, while the absence of leading bowlers Phil Kidney, through work commitments, and Trevor Staley, through injury, is proving costly to Manorbier's promotion chances this season.
