Pembrokeshire people will be offered the opportunity to take steps to health over the coming months thanks to the launch of an exciting new project that promotes independent walking. The new scheme, called Steps2Health, aims to get more people out walking. By the end of next year the scheme aims to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air, meet new people and improve their health by regular brisk walking. The project was launched last week by Clr. David Wildman, deputy chairman of the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board, at a reception hosted by the chairman of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Clr. Stephen Watkins. Speaking at the launch, Clr. Wildman said: "Walking is an affordable, enjoyable and easy exercise that almost everyone can take part in irrespective of age, fitness level or lifestyle. "I am sure that this project will be hugely successful in its aims of improving the health and wellbeing of people in Pembrokeshire." The launch was held in the Park Authority's marquee at the Pembrokeshire County Show, and offered invited guests the opportunity to take part in a short demonstration health walk around the showground. Steps2Health is a Pembrokeshire partnership scheme forming part of the national 'Walking Your Way to Health' programme. Over the coming months, trained walk leaders will be encouraging people to join walks in their local area. The project is led by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, with other partners including Pembrokeshire County Council, Pembrokeshire Local Health Board, The National Public Health Service, PLANED, Llanion and Monkton Communities First Partnership and Pembrokeshire Access Group. Funding is provided by the British Heart Foundation, the Big Lottery Fund and the Countryside Council for Wales.
