THE profile of Pembrokeshire as a visitor destination has rocketed in the past 12 months, with an average of 13 tourism-related articles printed per month about the county in the national media.

In 2007, there were more than 150 articles about Pembrokeshire in national newspapers and magazines, in publications as diverse as the Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Cycling World and Minor Monthly, the magazine for Morris Minor enthusiasts.

Articles ranged from six pages in the Sunday Times to two lines in Parenting without Tears.

More accommodation providers are now being sought to host the increasing number of journalists visiting the county.

"Press coverage plays a vital role in raising the profile and awareness of Pembrokeshire as a tourism destination, and the value of this free coverage would amount to over £220,000 in equivalent advertising costs," said Alan Turner, tourism marketing and development manager for Pembrokeshire County Council.

"Encouraging journalists to visit and write about Pembrokeshire is vital if we are to maintain the high profile we have in the press."

Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for cultural services, sports, leisure and tourism, added: "We would like to thank all the accommodation providers, the activity operators and visitor attractions who have helped host journalists over the years. Their generosity is invaluable."
