At the presentation of prizes to the winners of the first Tenby Writers Circle Annual Writing Competition, held last week at Art Matters, the chairperson, Kath Levell, opened the event by welcoming everyone and congratulating the committee for their hard work in organising such a successful competition, especially Tricia, Jane, Audrey and Judith.

She also welcomed and thanked the three judges for their careful consideration of the large number of high quality entries.

The judges were Lynsay Radion, popular English teacher from the Greenhill School and tutor to many adult students of English Literature at the Greenhill Further Education Centre; Maggie Trevett Evans, associate lecturer of Swansea University and chairperson of the Llanelli Writers Circle; and Kenneth Steven from Perthshire, internationally renowned poet and writer, whose works include the collections of poems entitled 'Iona and Wild Horses'.

The prizes were presented by the judges to the following successful winners:

Prose - 1. Tim O‚Connell Kilgetty (Prayer for Mr Snoddy); 2. Teresa Hulmes, Bridgend (Grandma's Garden); 3. Robert Nesbitt, Haverfordwest (Circles).

Poetry - 1. Robert Nesbitt, Haverfordwest (Paul Robeson at the County theatre); 2. Barry Tempest, Dorset (Preparations for War 2002-2003); 3. Rhoda Hodes, Freshwater East (Sepia).

Kenneth Steven, who was in the area to give a reading of his poetry at the request of the Tenby Arts Festival as part of the Festival Week, had kindly agreed to present a poetry workshop for the Circle and also adjudicate the competition, congratulated the winners and asked those who were able to be present to read their work; which they did, much to the enjoyment of the audience.

Closing the occasion, the chairperson hoped that the competition would be as supported in future years, and that Tenby Writers Circle would grow in strength. She added that all local aspiring writers would be welcome to join the Circle which meets on the first Monday of the month, contact Judith Barrow (secretary) on 01834 813443.
