Two school dinner ladies from Pembrokeshire were honoured by the Prince of Wales last week. Cook Eleri Edwards and area supervisor Carolyn Lloyd from Ysgol Y Frenni in Crymych were among those who attended a special reception at Clarence House designed to pay tribute to those helping to make healthier food for children. School dinner staff and head teachers from 60 schools across the country were invited in recognition of their efforts in improving school meals. Also in attendance was the Duchess of Cornwall and campaigning celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver. "We had a wonderful time" said Carolyn. "We talked to the Prince who wanted to know if the children liked their leeks! He was very pleasant. "It's not very often that the work we do gets any publicity, so it was nice to feel recognised." Clr. Islwyn Howells, cabinet member for children and young people, said it was important to mark the hard work and dedication that went on in school kitchens. "School staff have a vital role to play in improving school food and also in educating children about nutrition," he said. Ysgol y Frenni was among five Welsh schools chosen to attend last week's event. The school canteen caters for children from nursery age to first formers at Ysgol y Preseli and has a 75 to 80 per cent take-up for school dinners.
