Members of SWWRAG (South West Wales Reptile and Amphibian Group), based at Silent World Aquarium, Tenby, recently paid a visit to Beryl at the Pembrokeshire Hogspital.

While there they helped Beryl feed the hedgehogs dog food, hedgehog biscuits and calcium dust.

On the evening they visited, Beryl had 14 hedgehogs in her care, including Pinky, Perky, Peter Tick Tock, Lavender and Hilda, along with her four babies, Eenie, Meenie, Minee and Mo.

When Beryl receives a rescued hedgehog, they go straight into the primrose ward to be cleaned, have their ticks removed, and have an all-over check to make sure they are in good health. They are then transferred to the bluebell ward.

When they are fully recovered and settled, they are moved to the rabbit hutches in the garden, where they can become more acclimatised to the wild environment.

When possible, fully recovered hedgehogs are released back into the wild. Their new prospective habitat is carefully assessed before release.

On the evening of their visit, the SWWRAG members raised money for the hogspital.

All club members, young and old, had a very interesting and inspiring visit and are now hooked and totally in love with hedgehogs.

Since their visit, Hilda has died, leaving Beryl with the babies to hand rear. More hedgehogs have also arrived at the hogspital, so Beryl is looking for volunteers and donations.
