Llafur, the Welsh People's History Society (Cymdeithas Hanes Pobl Cymru) and the Women's Archive of Wales (Archif Menywod Cymru) have come together for a day school to be held on May 17. The title of the event is Women's' Worlds and Women's Work and is to be held in the Bloomfield Centre, Narberth. Among the speakers will be Professor Deirdre Beddoe, one of Wales' leaders in women's history who, with Jenny Sabine and Catrin Edwards, will be giving an update on the Heritage Lottery funded project Voices from the Factory Floor. The Women's Archive of Wales is currently conducting, throughout Wales, an oral history of women who worked in Welsh factories post 1945. Sadly most of these jobs have now gone to the Far East, so this is an important piece of work, capturing the memories of these women, before they have gone forever. The day will continue with a paper by Katherine Holden on the History of the British Nanny and Penny Jones will be introducing extracts from her film Lavender Lady, based on an oral history project conducted in Newport, Pembs. After the buffet lunch, Rosemary Scadden will continue the theme with her paper on Welsh girls in domestic service between the two world wars, called Voices from Domestic Service. To mark the centenary of the start of the Great War, Beth Jenkins will be talking about Women and the Professions during World War I. The day will finish with a discussion on the topics, chaired by Martin Wright. This free event is open to all and provides a unique opportunity for those living in West Wales to listen to some important historical research coming out of Wales today. The lunch is being provided by Narberth's own PlumVanilla Café at £8.
