An £80,000 investment in the electricity infrastructure in the centre of Tenby will improve services to local customers and help safeguard supplies during the busy tourist season. The initiative by Western Power Distribution (WPD), has involved laying and connecting new electricity mains cable and service connections to shops and homes along the length of Upper and Lower Frog Street. During the nine-week project, one- kilometre of cable was renewed along with 85 new service connections. "Undertaking the work with the minimum of disruption was key to the success of this project which is why our partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council's street works unit has been such an important factor," said Dave Brown, distribution manager for WPD's West Wales area. "The old electricity cables had been there since the 1930s, but because of their age were proving unreliable and needed to be replaced. "Our partnership approach with the council meant that we were able to schedule the work as a team - so that while council staff worked to remove the surface of the road our contractors were on hand to excavate, lay and connect the new mains and services. The council was then able to resurface the road, knowing that we had completed all necessary work. "During the course of the project, our engineers also liaised directly with every customer in the area to ensure connection transfers were arranged at convenient times. This was another important element in the success of the initiative," he said.
