Sir,
As a casual observer of the so called walkabout (Observer, July 26) I must agree with Clr. Will Rossiter on the value of this type of operation.
The truth is that Tenby needs to be colourful and different. We are what seaside holidays are all about. People come to Tenby to get away from their own bland environments and shop signboards are part of the holiday atmosphere as are postcard stands, flowers outside florists, fruit and veg outside greengrocers, and hardware outside the ironmongers.
For all the 30 odd years I spent cleaning shop windows in Tenby, I never saw anyone fall over a signboard or a litter bin or a bench seat that also stick out on the path. Perhaps the streetcare manager would be better employed cleaning the pavements with a steam machine once a week rather than asking people who pay the highest rates in the county to do it themselves.
Ed Stapleton,
Tenby.
PS. By the way, I have seen a few people bumping into the many bollards that have been installed along a lot of the pavements. Now they are a real hazard.
