Well recognised as the largest outdoor attraction of the summer months across West Wales, the Pembrokeshire County Show this year suffered badly from unseasonal weather.

Sadly, due to these adverse conditions, it turned out that the attendance on the second and third days put together was, possibly, not much greater than that recorded on the exceptional first day alone.

Up to two inches of rain fell from Tuesday night onwards and, without doubt, this must have deterred many thousands of would-be visitors.

Fresh from taking the Cuddy Supreme in hand championship at the Horse of the Year qualifier, Ceri Fell again claimed supreme from the horse and pony sections with her superb black three year old Section C colt, Starlands Evol.

Worthily standing in reserve was Olivia Bowen on the splendid 12-year-old Show Hunter Pony, the chestnut Helsington Material Girl owned by her father, Leo Bowen.

As ever, a particularly attractive feature were the 16 showjumping competitions offering over £15,000 in prize money, the highlight of which was the Valero Masters in which several members of the UK Olympic team were taking up the challenge.

The event this year was won by Berkshire-based international show jumper, Paul Crago, on the nine-year-old 17.2hh bay gelding, Calyprius, owned by Louisa Strutt. Paul has been a GB Nations Cup member on several occasions and has competed with great success across Europe and the UK. In close contention and runner-up was local rider, Andrew Davies, on Vijlada W. M., owned by J. R. Davies.

Sheep entries on the last day numbered over 700, with Eirlys, Barry and Stuart Jones taking both supreme and the native breeds championships with their yearling Hampshire Down ram.

Corrina and Jay Taylor took best from the pig entries with their 11-month-old pedigree Welsh gilt, Hideaway Willing 295.

In presenting the awards in the horticultural and craft area, the president-elect, Dennis Reed, a keen gardener himself, praised everyone for their enthusiasm and expertise and congratulated all successful exhibitors who had placed their amazing produce on show.
