The Templeton and Tavernspite school communities are bidding a heartfelt farewell to one of Pembrokeshire's most respected headteachers as Mr Kevin Phelps retires after an outstanding career dedicated to education.

After 18 years as Headteacher of Tavernspite School, including the last 12 years leading the successful federation of Tavernspite and Templeton Schools, he leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of inspirational leadership, educational excellence and unwavering commitment to the children and families he has served.

Twelve years ago, Templeton School faced an uncertain future, with the very real prospect of closure. At a time when school federations were still a relatively new concept, Mr Phelps was approached by the Local Authority to take on what many considered an almost impossible challenge.

Without hesitation, he accepted the role, bringing determination, optimism and a clear vision for the future of both schools. His leadership proved transformational.

Under Mr Phelps' leadership, Templeton School has gone from facing closure to becoming a thriving, vibrant and fully subscribed school, recognised for its welcoming atmosphere, ambitious curriculum and outstanding sense of community.

Together with Tavernspite School, the federation has become one of the most highly regarded partnerships in Pembrokeshire and across Wales, consistently achieving excellent outcomes and receiving highly positive Estyn inspection reports.

While these achievements speak volumes, those who know Mr Phelps say it is his warmth, kindness and genuine care for people that will be remembered most.

“The health and well-being of staff, children and their wider families has always been a significant part of Mr Phelps’ vision,” said Mrs Sarah Arthu, Deputy Headteacher of The Federation of Tavernspite and Templeton School.

“As a founding member of the Pembrokeshire Outdoor Schools programme, he has made learning in the outdoors accessible to all children across Pembrokeshire and beyond.

“As a keen Parkrunner, having completed almost 400 of the weekly 5k events at Colby Woodlands himself, he has championed Parkrun at Tavernspite and Templeton schools, encouraging countless children and their families to participate to improve their physical and mental well-being.

“Throughout his 18 years at Tavernspite and 12 years serving the Templeton community, Mr Phelps has championed the belief that every child deserves the very best education in an environment where they feel safe, valued and inspired.

“He has promoted outdoor learning, encouraged curiosity and creativity, nurtured confidence and ensured that every pupil has been supported to reach their full potential.
