The call for a new town crier in Tenby has heralded a good response, councillors were told this week, with one candidate set to fill the role.
Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas, whose late husband John Thomas served as Tenby’s town crier for more than 30 years, promoting the resort and and Pembrokeshire throughout the world while attending town crier events and competitions, recently started a search for a new town crier, telling her colleagues that it would be great for the town if someone else could now take on the role.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Thomas told members that they seem to have found their man after holding interviews and auditions for the role.
“We had an interview with young man from Tenby called Teifion Powell, who impressed us all, so we gave him some of John’s old cries to perform,” Clr. Mrs. Thomas told her colleagues.
“He is happy to compose his own cries too. He told us that he was interested in the role as one of his ancestors was a town crier,” she continued.
The town clerk told members that Mr. Powell’s late grandfather was Alan Mace, who served as Mayor of Tenby during the ’70s and ’80s.
“We gave Teifion a challenge to write and perform a cry congratulating Clr. Will Rossiter on his birthday, which he did from the tower top and was very impressive,” explained Clr. Mrs. Thomas.
“He had a fine voice and good timber, with the wind against him as well,” said Clr. Rossiter.
Councillors were all in favour of Mr. Powell being given the role of the new town crier and asked for a letter confirming this to be sent to him.
