Pembrokeshire MP Simon Hart is highlighting the problem of online bullying and abuse after securing a debate on the subject in Westminster.

He has joined forces with Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke and chair of the Women and Equality Select Committee, to hold a debate on the floor of the House of Commons about the subject.

The motion is due to be discussed on Thursday and reads: “That this House notes the increasing number of cases where the internet, social media and mobile phone technology are used to bully, harass, intimidate and humiliate individuals including children and vulnerable adults; calls on the Government to ensure clear legislation is in place that recognises the true impact and nature of online abuse (as distinct to offline abuse); and puts in place appropriate legal sanctions (including criminal), police training, CPS guidance and appropriate education for young people.”

Mr. Hart said: “Online abuse is something that I’ve always been aware of, but I have become more involved since reading of the appalling abuse some people get at the hands of internet trolls.

“It is just too easy for people to hide behind their keyboards and unleash a torrent of hurtful bile that can cause long-lasting damage. We want to explore the reasons behind this practice and to sound the Government’s plans to deal with it,” he added.
