Assembly Member Eluned Morgan has been promoted to the Welsh Government following the recent reshuffle by First Minster Carwyn Jones.

Elected to serve Mid and West Wales in the Assembly in May 2016, the former Member of the European Parliament will take on responsibility for the Welsh Language and LifeLong Learning, roles previously undertaken by Julie James and Alun Davies.

Speaking to the Observer, Eluned Morgan said: “I am very pleased to be part of the Welsh Government, drawing on my skills in Brussels and Westminster where I was part of the Shadow Cabinet.

“The Welsh Labour Government has put forward an ambitious plan to encourage one million Welsh speakers by 2050. I will be using my role in Government to think creatively about how we do this in the years ahead.”

As part of the Welsh Government’s ‘Programme for Government’, skills are a high priority to sustain and grow the Welsh economy.

Eluned Morgan continued: “The Welsh Government has a strong focus on making sure that young people and those seeking or already in employment have the right skillset for the jobs and challenges of the future. Technology is and will have an increasing impact on how we live and work. So I will want to look at placing the proper emphasis on the employability of our workforce so that all aspects of the government from education to health and housing and the issues that affect rural Mid and West Wales help to get people into sustainable employment.”

Eluned will continue to hold events and meet constituents in West Carmarthenshire and South Pembrokeshire as part of her regional Assembly Member role. Her fully functioning office based in Haverfordwest is open throughout the week to deal with constituents’ concerns by calling 0300 200 7264.
