Speaking in the Senedd, local Assembly Member Angela Burns AM has raised concerns that large national institutions are taking more than their fair share of financial support and it’s becoming harder for smaller institutions to access funding.

Speaking in the Senedd, she asked Jane Hutt AM, Minister for Finance: “I’d be interested to know what you might be able to do to creatively encourage a trickle-down of funding to some of the smaller institutions throughout Wales.

“We do not want to be left in a situation where we have a large tree surrounded by weak saplings.

“A great many of these smaller organisations, such as Tenby and Narberth museums - and there are many throughout Wales - are much more able to engage effectively with their local communities because they really understand them, and really, really chime with them.

“The concern that I and a number of other people have is that, because times are slightly tighter, all the funding is going to the big organisations.”

Afterwards she said: “I raised these concerns because a number of smaller companies, including Tenby Museum, raised concerns that the larger institutions appeared to be attracting most of the financial support available.

“It is important because they are local, people do not need to travel to the likes of Cardiff or further afield, this provides greater local access and amenity to local communities and visitors.”
