A public meeting is to be held to discuss how the people of Narberth can come together to secure library services in the town.
From April 2016, Pembrokeshire County Council will slash opening hours to just six each week, unless the community steps in to provide financial or volunteer support.
The Friends of Narberth Library, supported by Labour’s Assembly Candidate for South Pembrokeshire, Marc Tierney, staged a silent, sit-in protest earlier this year at plans to downgrade the town’s library provision.
Last week, Marc Tierney on behalf of the Friends group, Clr. Sue Rees on behalf of Narberth Town Council and Swim Narberth met with officers of Pembrokeshire County Council to discuss feedback from the recent library consultation.
Building on the experience of Swim Narberth, it is hoped that a new group could be established to keep Narberth Library open longer each week.
Marc Tierney said: “The recent consultation was well attended with some important points being made by members of the public. The availability of internet access and wifi for library users, as well as maintaining a regular pattern of opening hours was important to Narberth Library users.
“To ensure we don’t lose the library in Narberth, it is really important that the local community comes together to save it to strengthen the Friends of the library group.”
Anyone with an interest in the library is invited to come along to the meeting being organised by the Friends of Narberth Library with the support of Swim Narberth which will be held on Thursday, October 22, at 6.30 pm, at the Meeting Room of Narberth Swimming Pool.
