Wales’ First Minitser Eluned Morgan was questioned on her position on immigration in the Senedd this week, following the UK Labour Government's announcement of stricter rules on immigration.

During her weekly scrutiny session in the Chamber, on May 20, the First Minister said in response to Cefin Campbell MS’s question that it was important to "follow the red Welsh way."

The Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd for Mid and West Wales referred in his question to Keir Starmer's response to a question from Liz Saville-Roberts MP during the First Minister's Questions last week, where she was accused of talking 'rubbish.'

The Prime Minister was widely condemned for his response to the Plaid Cymru Westminster leader’s question, including by the Labour peer and the party’s former interim leader, Baroness Harriet Harman.

Mr. Campbell MS pointed out immigrants’ economic and social contribution to his region of Mid and West Wales: those born outside of the UK made up around 9% of Hywel Dda Health Board’s staff and around 7% of University of Wales, Trinity Saint David’s student population.

Speaking in the Senedd Chamber, he said:The new immigration White Paper launched by Keir Starmer last week fails to recognise the contribution that migrant workers and overseas students make to our economy, and represents a further lurch to the right from a Prime Minister determined to dance to Nigel Farage’s tune.

“In fact, I find it increasingly difficult to recognise today’s Labour Party as it has strayed so far from its roots, as cuts to winter fuel payments and disability benefits, the two-child benefit cap and the betrayal of the Port Talbot steelworkers all demonstrate.

“So, will the First Minister, therefore, condemn the direction that her party leader has taken on immigration, or does she, as Starmer said of Liz Saville-Roberts in Westminster last week, believe that I’m also talking rubbish?”

In response, Eluned Morgan MS said: “I think that our overseas workers in our social care sector are appreciated, and they do make a great contribution, and a significant contribution, to our workforce. They bring diversity, they bring experience, they bring sympathy and skills into our sector.

“We have to be careful, and it is very important that we do navigate our own way here in Wales by ensuring that we do follow the red Welsh way.”
