Local police are urging members of the public to be on their guard and not to be 'conned' by unscrupulous workmen offering services such as gardening services or tarmac laying. The warning comes after an elderly lady in Tenby was charged £120 for 20 minutes work on Monday. Inquiries are ongoing to trace the men concerned who police are desperate to speak to about their gardening skills and business methods amongst other things. "From time to time, police officers in the county receive complaints from members of the public who feel that they have been 'conned' by such workmen," said Insp. Les Clark, of the town's police station. "Often the completed work is below standard and vastly over-priced," continued the officer. "It is evident that there are gangs of men who drive around areas looking for elderly/vulnerable people who they can con out of large amounts of cash for piffling amounts of work such as gardening/hedge tidying etc," he said. "Elderly people are sometimes intimidated into paying the price asked for. Often the circumstances add up to criminal deception," he added. Insp. Clark appealed to the public not to deal with 'workers' who turn up on their doorstep offering their services. "Close the door on them and dial 999 if concerned," he said.
