Police in Pembrokeshire are warning about what appears to be a scam to obtain money.

In a recent incident in the county, an elderly person received a phone call from a person purporting to be from an electricity company claiming that the householder owed a sum of money and inviting her to pay it over the 'phone using a credit card. A quick-thinking relative made enquiries and established that no such debt was due.

Sgt. David Perry from the Community Safety Department said: "This appears to be another attempt at getting people to part with money by making them believe they have a debt to clear. No payments by credit or debit card should be made over the 'phone unless you are absolutely sure who you are dealing with.

"Any cold call from a person purporting to be from a utility or other company must be treated as suspect. If in any doubt, refuse to give any details and make further enquiries with the utility or company concerned."
