Police are warning shopkeepers in Pembrokeshire to remain vigilant to a money changing scam where individuals try and confuse till operators into unwittingly handing over money.

The warning comes after a man is suspected of trying to defraud a store assistant at the Spar in Pembroke Main Street last week.

The man bought a bottle of pop with a £20 and was handed his change. He then asked the store assistant to change a £5 note; four £1 coins; and five 20p coins for a £10 note, which the assistant did.

The man then tried to confuse the assistant by asking for his £20 note back in exchange for the £10 note. Realising that this would have short-changed the shop by £10, the shop assistant refused.

PC Ellen Coles, of Dyfed Powys Police, said: "I would urge shopkeepers and store assistants across the county to remain vigilant to these type of scams. The shop assistant in this case did every thing right; she remained calm and alert, and reported the incident immediately to police."

The man is described as white, stocky, approximately 6ft tall, aged in his 40s, with dark short hair, and speaks with a Geordie accent.

If anybody has any information that could lead to identifying this man or has any information about this incident they should contact PC Ellen Coles at Pembroke Dock Police Station on 101.
