Chief Superintendent Paul Amphlett, Divisional Commander, Pembrokeshire Division, responded to Mr. Fryer's letter by saying:
"On a positive note, at least there is some grudging admiration from Mr. Fryer of the local police officers. They have had a difficult summer and have worked very hard in the town to strike the right balance between tolerance and enforcement.
"Whatever the perception of Senior Officers, or the state of today's youth culture, the police officers who serve you (the public) in Pembrokeshire, serve you very well.
"Mr. Fryer's comments appear to focus on two issues - the Hen and Stag culture and the commitment of Senior Officers to the policing of Tenby.
The Hen and Stag phenomenon, appears to be here to stay. We have to police the consequences of that with very limited resources.
"Every summer Pembrokeshire Division as a whole supports Tenby Section by drafting in officers at critical times. Those officers are there primarily to deal with public order issues. Additionally, all the Senior Officers in the Division regularly join Tenby officers in patrolling the Section at night and this includes Saundersfoot and Narberth.
"The division has a very pro-active approach to liquor licensing and is seen outside the county as an example for others to follow. We have also actively encouraged local businesses and other organisations to support a multi-agency approach to crime prevention and public tranquillity.
"Tenby, and every other Station in my Division would benefit from additional officers, but that is not going to happen in the foreseeable future. We have to work 'smarter' with the existing resources. We regularly review whether those resources are in the 'right place' and in the 'right numbers'.
"Next summer Tenby will be supported again from within Pembrokeshire, either through secondments to the town or officers drafted in at critical times.
"Doing nothing about local concerns is not an option for Senior Officers. We do take our responsibility to Tenby and the rest of the county very seriously indeed."
