Tenby Town Council and the local police have sent out a stern warning to local youths this week, promising swift action if acts of anti-social behaviour around the town continue.
Last week, the council were shocked to discover that a group of teenagers had been spotted throwing fruit at the town's war memorial.
The same evening, vandalism had also been caused to a shelter at the town's Paragon Gardens, while the following day, flags placed outside St. Johns Church for its Daffodil Festival were stolen.
"While we cannot connect the incidents, the South Parade area is frequented by a gang of local youths in the evenings and it does seem to be too much of a coincidence," said Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward.
"I know children can be a bit mischievous, but these sort of acts are just malicious. I cannot believe that there are youngsters who have such little respect for those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom."
"We have tried to clean the war memorial, but it appears that the acid in the fruit has reacted with the marble and stained it," said Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, who is also chairman of the town council's gardens committee.
"The memorial has only recently been refurbished and has been acclaimed as one of the best kept War Memorials in the country.
"Now, it looks likely that we are going to have to employ a team of specialists to clean the memorial again, which will be an added expense for the ratepayers of the town."
Clr. Mrs. Ward said that she and Clr. Mrs. Brown had met with the local police on Friday to discuss the situation.
"The police are monitoring the situation and promise us that anyone caught will be arrested and their parents informed," she said.
"I urge parents to have a word with their children about this sort of activity and to make sure they know where they are at night," said Clr. Mrs. Ward.
"Also, if anyone sees any incidents, they should get in touch with the police immediately."
A police spokesman confirmed that they were monitoring the situation and would take "appropriate action."
"We ask parents to have a word with their children to remedy the situation before we become involved," said the spokesman. "I assure you, anyone caught will be arrested and dealt with appropriately."
