Nick Bourne AM for Mid and West Wales and Welsh Conservative leader in the National Assembly for Wales has condemned plans to merge police forces on the basis of size. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary was due to report to Charles Clarke, Home Secretary, this week.
The report was likely to mean the end of smaller police forces. The aim of the review was to strengthen constabulary leadership and secure economies of scale.
Nick Bourne commented: "Dyfed-Powys Police does an excellent job, in fact it is first class and unparalleled and I have a lot of time and respect for the officers that serve there. Whilst I am the first to sign up to improving the fight against crime with closer communication and clear leadership, Dyfed- Powys Police has shown how effective it is and must remain.
"What really matters is efficiency, lack of bureaucracy and having more police on the street. Dyfed-Powys Police Force's record speaks for itself."
